To simulate the original state and atmosphere of their reference projects our students built some models of the apartements. Here you see a project from Paulo Mendes da Rocha, the "Edifício Guaimbê" in São Paulo. The model has been built by Ferdinand Fleckenstein.

I am working on a design for the "Allianz Areal" adjacent to the Old Opera in Frankfurt Main. Everybody, who have to deal with this area, is welcome to post their creative and productive contributions, especially the students from Graz :-)

For those, who are thinking about luxury forms of living in a Residential Tower, we´d like to strongly suggest (as heard in the lecture Baukonstruktion II by Prof. Fink) that you take a look at the New York Apartment Houses of Rosario Candela and James Carpenter. This example was finished in 1927 in 812 Park Avenue, New York. The building comprises large duplex units on the typical floors, with triplex penthouse units.

Last week we started with our ongoing design project. We are glad about the cooperation with Juan Herreros, ETSA Madrid and Roger Riewe from the TU Graz.

This year´s topic is referring to some essential questions concerning the contemporary city and the building typology of Residential Towers. Actually the development taking place in big cities like Hong Kong is also becoming an issue in Madrid, Frankfurt and Munich.

Beside the urban context, the program for living, which has to be defined exactly by each student raises the question of an appropriate and a capable structure. The design project deals with the interaction between this structure and the skin, between the outer appearance and the inner spatial solution, between materiality and a the atmosphere created. The engagement with a proper and sustainable design study is an integral part of the concept, which has to accord to the highest standards of energy efficiency.

We hope that this blog supports the information exchange between all participants of the different sites and universities.

I´m looking forward for many innovative projects that lead the potential in this interesting discussion.
